Recognized art master of today1/9/2024 ![]() It would be weird if you met Paul McCartney at a party and he was in front of a group of guests with a cocktail in his hand trying hard to convince them that he was “a really good song writer”. If you are already “there” you don’t need people to know about it. The first one has no guarantee that you as the observer know how much he actually knows about the profession. He is relaxed and confident, he underplays his position because he knows it can never be taken away and he knows everyone around him knows he is a Master. The difference is this: both are incredibly knowledgeable and astute people in the world of wine, but because the second one has made it, he has nothing to prove. Master Somm: I’m just poppin’ corks and keeping people happy. Professional wine person who is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about wine, just hasn’t passed the test: A Somm is an educator, a master of every aspect of wine, he has to be fluent in the world of wine and be totally accessible to the patrons of the restaurant, so he has to be a master of the art of understanding people as well. To (possibly over) simplify it, it looks something like this when you ask the simple question “what is a Somm?” What I found interesting and pertinent to our discussion is this: The difference in attitude towards the profession between those who have made it and those who have not. So in 50 years only 172 people have passed the test. ![]() At this writing, there are only 172 people who have earned the title of Master Sommelier in America since the organization’s inception in 1969. Over the years I have enjoyed watching a documentary series developed around a group of people who are trying to break into the elite echelons of the wine world and become Master Sommeliers. Those two places are Mastering the art, or mastering the image. In any art you always have two choices about where to put your energy, and you can choose one, the other, or a mixture of both.
