SIMON: Why do you think your album wound up being so closely evocative of events going on now?ĮLFMAN: I felt in 2020, but it hasn't changed today, that we're still living in an addendum that George Orwell wrote to "1984." Truth is turned in reverse. And to write cold onto paper, you use solfege, which means you hear all the notes in your head, and you know what they are.ĮLFMAN: I'm of the other side, that I need to hear the pitches, and I just compose completely from top to bottom as I go. Elfman, how do you write music?ĮLFMAN: You know, I didn't have any training. (SOUNDBITE OF SONG, "EVERYBODY LOVES YOU")ĮLFMAN: (Singing) Everybody loves you. And after a while, I found myself reflecting about my life and trying to figure things out. We said, well, if we're going into quarantine, we'll go up there. I have a home up north that I've had for 25 years. And then, of course, (laughter) it cancels.ĮLFMAN: And that's just really, like, the Elfman luck. I wasn't expecting or setting out to do an album at all.ĮLFMAN: I was preparing months of work into this - coming back on stage for the first time in ages for Coachella two years ago. The question was - when I started "Big Mess," it's like, who am I? What is my voice, you know? And I didn't know. What did you mean by that?ĮLFMAN: Well, I mean, it had been almost 30 years since I was on stage and recording and doing that kind of stuff. SIMON: You said when you started this project, you didn't know what Danny Elfman sounded like anymore. Danny Elfman joins us now from Los Angeles. It's called "Big Mess." And its 18 songs are raw and absurdist. And in his latest album, Danny Elfman reflects a little more on himself. Danny Elfman composed the theme for "The Simpsons." He's won a Grammy and been nominated for Oscars. PLUTA: That's Deborah LaBelle, a lawyer with Planned Parenthood of Michigan, who calls the restraining order welcomed, though temporary, relief. PLUTA: A judge here stepped in yesterday at the behest of Governor Whitmer and issued a temporary restraining order that means abortions are still legal in those 13 counties.ĭEBORAH LABELLE: And therefore, services and the provision of abortion is still legal in Michigan. County prosecutors around the state, if a case is brought to them and a doctor performs an abortion and it's not to save the life of the mother, then they could be prosecuted for that. He says local prosecutors should get to decide.ĭAVID KALLMAN: There is a valid law that's on the books. David Kallman is a prominent Michigan attorney who argues anti-abortion cases. Some prosecutors say they're ready to file charges others say they won't. There are 13 local prosecutors with abortion clinics in their counties. That case was dismissed this week on a jurisdictional issue, and that set off a tilt-a-whirl of legal actions. But a state court judge blocked that while a challenge was litigated. Supreme Court's Dobbs decision in June, it was expected the 1931 Michigan law would be reactivated. PLUTA: First, a little backstory - following the U.S. Doctors, health care providers are going through lack of clarity as well as long as there is any uncertainty about this 1931 abortion ban that doesn't even include exceptions for rape and incest. KAYLIE HANSON: Women are going through a serious lack of clarity. And Kaylie Hanson, a spokeswoman for Governor Gretchen Whitmer, says this issue needs to be settled. It's considered one of the strictest abortion bans in the country. RICK PLUTA, BYLINE: The old law targets abortion providers, who could face felony charges except to save the life of a pregnant woman. Michigan Public Radio's Rick Pluta reports. A central question is whether an abortion ban adopted in 1931 is enforceable. In Michigan, a legal drama is surrounding the question of whether abortion remains legal in the state.
